Don't Talk in the Gym

Don't Talk in the Gym

This is a simple tip. Don’t talk in the gym. It will distract you and make you lose focus. If you want to make gains in the gym you have to concentrate on what you are doing. People who talk about rubbish in between sets don’t make the same gains as those that stay focused on what they are doing. They don’t train with enough intensity. Their technique tends to be inconsistent and they can’t hit the loads that are optimal to them making progress.

Talking to your coach about technical ques or load selection is fine, along with the odd bit of encouragement to a training partner, but that should be it. You have to have laser like focus. The more quality reps and quality sets you have in your training sessions, the better the results will be.

This is why I never have any music on when I train or when I coach. I want to focus on what I am doing. I don’t want to be distracted by anything. Whilst music may be a source of motivation for some people, I don’t need it. And for most people I find it isn’t missed once they are training correctly anyway. They get immersed in what they are doing. I coach a lot of young people too, it is hard enough to keep them focused on their technique and give them appropriate ques they can respond to as it is, let alone if I threw on some music that they could carry on with as well.

Another thing is no phones. Leave it in your car or at the front door. Nothing will ruin your training like having your phone with you. That is a huge distraction for a lot of people. You can check all your social media bullshit after your session, this is the real world. Training is one of the only times people can’t lie to themselves. You either lifted the weight or you didn’t. You won or you lost. You had a dig or you dogged it. In the social world you can make everything seem perfect. In the gym, or on the field, you have to actually do it. So, forget the phone.

In a group or team environment you have to keep it business like. It doesn’t take much for people to get off track in a group and waste an entire session. I would see it all the time at footy training. This is why I would stick to myself. I’d tend to get in early so it wasn’t as busy, do my work, and get out and do some extra skill work on the field.

On a side note, I hear a lot of people talk about The Last Dance at the moment, saying how great it is. I enjoy it too. The thing I notice though is that people are missing the point. Jordan is who is because of his mentality, because of hard work. He was ruthless. He had high standards and would make everyone come up to his level, no matter the cost. He was obsessed. He had laser like focus on his goals. He didn’t waste a day or take a session off. He was intense.

If you want to be great at something and you don’t have that attitude, forget it. So, enjoy the documentary but maybe think about what you are going to actually do to improve yourself instead of just nodding say “yeah that’s it”. You don’t know what it is, you have probably never busted yourself for a week, let alone a decade or two.

If we learn from those lessons, some of us may be a chance of achieving our goals. But we have to be honest with ourselves. Get to work, focus, and don’t talk shit while you train.

Gem and myself had a great day on Saturday catching up with the SJJA boys and meeting Charles Negromonte for the first time.

We got to sit down with the boys and make some plans for 2020 in regards to their nutrition and strength training.

For Igor, we will be focusing on adding some muscle mass and working on increasing his strength in the gym. As many of you know he has had some big injuries in the past few years, so we will be addressing those and trying to make him as healthy as possible for when he returns to competition.

As for Charles, he has some important competitions coming up over the next few weeks, and in April will be competing in Abu Dhabi for the worlds. This week, Charles will be competing in Melbourne at the UAEJJF National Pro, so we won't be making any changes until next week where we will begin preparations for the worlds.

He already has a solid foundation so we will be making some changes to his nutrition and we will start general preparation in the gym.
Charles recently won the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Event so we don't have to come in and make extreme changes to his preparation. We will layer in certain things so that it doesn't disrupt Charles' preparation and he can have confidence leading into the important competitions.
If you look at Charles' achievements and ranking, you will see that he is already world class. The important thing from our point of view is to work in with Charles and not just throw a whole heap of craziness into his world. Too many times I see coaches go too extreme with athletes to try and prove they know what they are doing or something like that. I would much rather take it slowly and make sure Charles feels comfortable with his training, is recovering well, and feels motivated to train, than to try and implement a perfect plan that may disrupt his performance in a negative way.

This is a very similar approach we took with Professor Bruno when we first started working together. He was already very successful so its not like he didn't already know what he was doing. We just helped identify a few areas he could work on to further improve his performance and worked with him on how to implement it in his current plan. The biggest thing I was concerned about was not coming in, changing all these things, and ruining his career. The boys put their lives into this, they only get one shot at it. Over the years though we got to a point where everything we wanted to implement, was, and the progress continued with each new preparation. We were fortunate enough to be apart of many world titles that Bruno won over recent years.

It will be a big year for the SJJA team so I will keep you updated with their progress.

Getting Results Through Nutrition and Training

Getting Results Through Nutrition and Training

It has been a while since I have posted about any body composition results. It isn't something we often focus on often with our posts, but it is a huge part of what we do. The body comp results are a by product of hard work and consistency with nutrition, as our main goal is to increase performance on the rugby league field and also on the mats for jiu-jitsu. Whether it is cutting weight or putting on muscle mass, we want our athletes to be lean whilst maintaining or increasing their lean mass. We don't do a "bulk" phase and then cut back. For example, Bruno and Igor may increase in body fat slightly after a big competition but it isn't by a huge amount. When Bruno is in peak condition for worlds he gets down to 7-8% body fat but when he is "off" or in maintenance mode between preparations, the worst he will get to is 11-12%. This allows the body and mind to recover, but it also sets him up for a great preparation the next time a big comp is coming up. He still eats clean during this time as well. There may be a slight increase in carbs and also a drop in training volume but it isn't like he just stops training and starts to eat fast food. Consistency is very important if you want to be the best at what you do.

The young rugby league players are doing really well. It is great to see them progressing so well and building such a healthy foundation at such a young age. Below are some results from this past month.

Body weight - 60kg was 58.5kg
Body fat - 10.9% was 12.5%
Lean mass - 53.5kg was 51.2kg
This is good going for 3 weeks worth of work especially since it isn't the beginning of Mani's training and nutrition. He has come down from 23.6% body fat and has increased his lean mass from 48.1kg.

Lochy (15 years old)
Body weight - 53kg was 51.5kg
Body fat - 12.5% was 12.6%
Lean mass - 46.4kg was 45kg
Again I am happy with this result as he has increased lean mass while maintaining his body fat level. It is quality muscle he is putting on. I am not in a rush to see the scale weight increase rapidly. He started at 48kg and is now at 53kg so I am happy with the progress.

The SJJA jiu-jitsu team that competed in Abu Dhabi had some crazy results as well. As mentioned above Bruno and Igor both got down under 10% as they always do during their preparation. We also had Lucas and Tom who we helped out with their preparation this year. They both done really well. I will share Lucas results.

Body weight - was 86kg finished at 82kg (1 week out from comp, we got this to 80kg before we cut further)
Body fat - 16.1% finished at 10.1% (1 week out but he would have got to around 9% before comp)
Lean mass - started at 72.2kg and got up to 73.7kg.
This was in about 2 months worth of work. With a longer prep we could have done even more. In saying that, he was in great shape so we didn't really have much more to do nutritionally, it would have been more time to work on the strength though.

Mike Johnstone has also been on board for the past month and has achieved some great results himself. We still have a lot of preparation time ahead of us so I am excited to see where he can get to. Not many people peak in their 50's but I think Mike will.

Body weight - 73.5kg now 74kg
Body fat - 23.4% now 18.4%
Lean mass - 56.3kg now 61.2kg

I share this to show that with hard work, dedication, and consistency you can get great results in a fairly short time period. The longer you stick at it the better your health, mental, and physical performance will be. I am happy for what everyone is achieving and glad I can go along for the ride with them.
