Will Strength Training Affect My Flexibility?

Growing up I would hear things like “lifting weights will make you muscle bound and slow” or “going to the gym makes you tight and increases the chance of injuries”, l now know comments like this are not true. If you train correctly, strength training will increase your speed and can even enhance flexibility, not hamper it.

As early as 1956, Massey and Chaudet demonstrated that heavy resistance training does not cause a decrease in flexibility (Fleck). In 1987 others showed that weight training actually increased the range of motion of the ankle, trunk, and shoulder joint after 11 weeks of resistance training without any additional flexibility training.

The type of training program used and the initial flexibility level of an athlete influence the gains you can have in flexibility from resistance training. If an athlete comes in and is extremely tight then incorporating a flexibility program in conjunction with a resistance training program is in order. In this case resistance training alone may not get the athlete flexible enough to perform certain movements safely or perform better in their chosen sport. The type of program will also dictate the amount of flexibility gained from resistance training with Olympic lifters displaying greater ranges of motion than say a powerlifter. This makes sense when you look at the two sports and see the degree of flexibility that is required to perform a snatch in comparison to a bench press. There is an optimal amount of flexibility needed for every given sport, you don’t always need or want maximal flexibility.

Muscle hypertrophy may decrease flexibility in some instances. This could be the case if someone had an extremely large chest and tried to touch their elbows in front of them. While I do believe hypertrophy may affect flexibility I think that most times it is because no attention is paid to maintaining or increasing flexibility in this group of athletes more so than hypertrophy being the only cause. Imbalance between the agonist and antagonist is also another reason for this decrease in flexibility in my opinion so it is important to look at program design to maintain or optimize flexibility.

If you are looking to maintain or increase flexibility with strength training alone, than training through the full range of motion is extremely important. This seems like common sense but what most people I see in a public gym consider full range of motion is a joke.

Resistance training and flexibility training complement one another. Charles Poliquin has said that stretching is the yin to strength trainings yang. Flexibility training may increase functional range of motion while strength and power training helps to improve the control of that functional range of motion.

So generally strength training will either improve or show no change in flexibility. If you want to enhance flexibility you have to train it like everything else. As muscle hypertrophy increases you may have to pay attention to flexibility training. Balance between the strength of agonist and antagonist has to be monitored and using a full range of motion will help improve gains in flexibility and performance. If you want the best results combine a strength training program with a flexibility program.

"It will take great desire, determination, dedication, plus discipline of the mind; and the body must be adapting to these heavier loads. Sacrifices will be required as well as patience for the progress. It means quality effort and time must be spent to achieve the goal. To succeed, you must have faith in your ability to carry your training and training plan to success. Progress will come in increments so you must keep hammering away with your goal always in sight. Your focus on your goal should be so great that you even dream it in your sleep. Only when you come to the point of believing in your ability to accomplish it will this goal be met." - Tommy Kono

I think that covers it. 

For me, "sacrifices will be required as well as patience for progress" is an important highlight. Many of us will say we are willing to do anything to achieve a goal but what we don't say is what we are willing to sacrifice. To achieve anything worthwhile you will have to leave some things behind. That may be people, time, or money for example. Define what you are willing to sacrifice as you are setting your goals. If all your friends are going to party, are you willing to stay home and go to bed early? 
Patience for progress. You won't achieve your goals immediately and you will have to stick it out through tough periods and may even doubt if it is worth it. You see a lot of people set goals only to bail on them after a month because they didn't get close to where they imagined in their mind or at the first sign of a set back they lose focus and change goal. 

Also, "Your focus on your goal should be so great that you even dream it in your sleep". I don't believe in balance. I think it is bullshit. If you are chasing a goal and you are truly, 100% committed to achieving it, it will consume your life. People don't reach greatness being balanced. They are obsessed with what they are doing/trying to achieve. They can't help but think about it and talk about it because they love what they are doing and it is always on their mind.

For those of you who don't know who Tommy Kono is, he was basically the Michael Jordan of weightlifting. Here is a bit on his career from Wikipedia "Kono was a gold medalist at both the 1952 Summer Olympics and 1956 Summer Olympics, and a silver medalist at the 1960 Summer Olympics under coach Bob Hoffman. Kono won the World Weightlifting Championships six consecutive times from 1953 to 1959 and was a three-time Pan American Games champion; in 1955, 1959, and 1963.[8] A knee injury prevented him from qualifying for the 1964 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and the following year he retired from the sport.[4] He set a total of 26 world records and 7 Olympic records.[9][10]
Kono was also a successful bodybuilder, winning the Fédération Internationale Haltérophile et Culturiste Mr. Universe titles in 1954, 1955, 1957 and 1961.[11] After his retirement he turned to coaching, taking on the Mexican 1968 Summer Olympics and West German 1972 Summer Olympics weightlifting teams before becoming head coach of the United States' Olympic weightlifting team at the 1976 Summer Olympics.[4][9]
During his weightlifting career in the 1960s, he developed a pair of bands to support knees during training. These eventually extended to the elbows and became standard weightlifting equipment.[9] While he was coaching in Germany during the 1970s, his correspondence with Adidas led to the firm's development of low cut weightlifting shoes.[12][13]"

I caught up with Mike the other day and as we were going through his strength training program I noticed he really carried his right shoulder and asked if it had been injured. Mike told me it had and explained to me that he has worked out ways to protect it whilst training and competing in jiu-jitsu. I gave it a quick little test to see the range of motion and it was like a moving a piece of steel. I told him we would finish going through the program and do his nutritional stuff and then I'd help get some range into it for him. 
As you can see there was quite a dramatic improvement and it didn't take me more than two minutes to do. Actually you can tell how by the clock in the background. That wasn't planned but I suppose it shows you that you can get quite good results in a short period of time. These results will last a while too, exactly how long I am not sure, but as Mike trains through a better range of motion some of the results will stick. Next time I catch up with Mike I will do a bit of soft tissue work beforehand and he will have even better improvement.
